As a freelancer, what software do you use or want to use?
I thought what I needed was more knowledge.
The perfect tool.
The ONE app that’s gonna help me streamline my todos and processes.
The ONE book that’s gonna make all of the difference.
I scaled my business to over 10k in recurring revenue in the first year (at age 21) which I was pretty proud of.
And looking back… the tools I used made none of the difference.
It was the uncomfortable calls I made, the value I gave, the focus I had.
There are a few tools though, that I use on a daily basis. Here’s a great list of 100+ tools for freelancers.
The ones that have impacted my business the most are the following:
- AND CO freelance app: I use them for invoicing, payments, expense tracking, etc. – I used to pay for the app but ever since they got acquired by Fiverr made their whole suite of services FREE. My favorite thing about it though is probably that they have a standard freelance contract directly integrated in the app & proposals.
- Google Slides: yes, I’m not kidding. I do all my graphic design in Google Slides 😀 Canva is great too but I love how simple it is to collaborate, share and download. Here’s the template I use.
- Timeular: And Co has a time tracking feature too but personally I use Zei. It’s a physical product that you flip around depending on your activity. This is perfect for tracking offline activities. I’m not always by my computer and ready to track my time. Zei makes it so I can track offline activities like meetings etc. too PLUS it looks cool in the office.
- Airtable: I freaking love this tool. I use it instead of Google Sheets or Excel. Recently I also replaced some Trello boards with Airtable. It’s basically a spreadsheeet tool in the cloud. What I like about it that Google Sheets doesn’t do is that I can drag drop images into the spreadsheet (perfect for editorial calendars, content ideas etc.). PLUS: I can switch the view to “kanban” or “calendar” so it replaces a lot of tools for me.
- Fiverr: I outsource SO many little tedious tasks on Fiverr. I like it better than Freelancer or Upwork because the service providers basically pitch me on how a gig should be done instead of me having to come up with the instructions. PS: not everything on there is $5 USD anymore.
Summing up: don’t get stuck on the “what’s the best tool to fix my business” step. I did that and it didn’t get me anywhere. The magic is in the execution and how you use the tools.
